Brooklyn Bedding makes some of our favorite high-value mattresses, like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature and Aurora Luxe. The new Copperflex and Copperflex Pro mattresses are comfortable, versatile and supportive options at a very budget-friendly price, and they have already made a few of our best lists.
For someone who is looking for an affordable, firm mattress that might help alleviate back pain, I think one of the Copperflex mattresses is the best choice.
First impressions of the Copperflex mattress
The first thing we noticed after unboxing the base model Copperflex mattress (more on that later) was the firmness profile. When a bed is fresh out of the box it can feel very soft because it needs some time for the foams to fully inflate and firm up (since the bed has been compressed in plastic for up to several weeks). The Copperflex mattress didn’t have much of an off-gassing process and it was quite firm right out of the box.
I also noticed the quilted top of the mattress that looks very inviting and the dark blue and gray exterior with the copper accents give it a premium look that makes the bed look much more expensive than it actually is.
The most shocking part was seeing the price point of the Copperflex mattress, which is only $665 for the base model in a queen-size, which is competitive with much cheaper brands — it is seriously impressive to this mattress expert.
Is the Copperflex mattress right for you?
Anyone looking for a firm, supportive memory foam mattress for a low price should seriously consider the Copperflex mattress. The value of the Copperflex in the foam or hybrid model is up there with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress — the only real downside is that this bed is going to be a bit too firm for the majority of side sleepers. Still, if you don’t favor your side I can strongly recommend Copperflex.
Copperflex mattress firmness and feel
Copperflex feel
The feel of the Copperflex mattress is a pretty straightforward dense memory foam. You get the prototypical sink-in, body-conforming sensation on the Copperflex, which feels quite dense. Slow responsiveness means that when you remove weight or pressure from the foams, they will take time to return to their original shape — a common characteristic of memory foam. The top layers of memory foam on the Copperflex are very slow to respond.
Because of the firmness profile of the Copperflex, you don’t sink into the bed all that much, so if you really dislike the feel of memory foam, you might be able to get by on it, but it probably won’t be your favorite bed. The biggest thing I would say is that you will definitely feel the density of the foams even if you don’t sink into the foams much.
Copperflex firmness and sleeper types
The Copperflex mattresses are all quite firm — there are four different versions of Copperflex and we tested all four. There is the base model that’s just called Copperflex with a foam version and a hybrid version and there is also the Copperflex Pro with a foam version and a hybrid version.
Usually, when we see multiple versions of the same bed, firmness is a big differentiating factor, but in our testing process we found the firmness of all four Copperflex mattresses to be virtually the same across the board at a medium-firm, if not a bit firmer.
The Mattress Smasher 9000 firmness testing device gave the foam and hybrid models of the Copperflex a 7.8 out of 10 and the Copperflex Pro foam and hybrid models a 7.9 out of 10, with 10 being the firmest.
So no matter which model of Copperflex you choose — it will be most ideal for back, stomach and certain combination sleepers. If you sleep predominantly on your side I would recommend a softer mattress that does a better job at offering pressure relief for your hips and shoulders.
Copperflex mattress construction
The construction of the Copperflex will vary depending on which version you choose. The foam model begins with a thick layer of dense support foam, and in the hybrid model, this layer of foam is replaced with encased coils.
This is the only construction difference between the foam model and the hybrid model, and the comfort foams above the support layer are identical.
Above the support layer is a layer of “Variflex” transition foam, which is a firm, responsive foam that provides a buffer between the support layer and the top comfort layers.
Above the transition layer is a layer of lumbar support foam, which gives the Copperflex mattress a zone support design. Above the lumbar layer are two distinct layers of memory foam including a copper-infused memory foam which is where the bed gets its name.
The topmost layer is actually the quilted cover, which features an additional thin layer of comfort foam.
Copperflex zone support
One of the key features of the Copperflex mattress is that lumbar support layer. Many beds we have tested feature some kind of targeted, zone support design — but most of the time it’s not something that can be felt that strongly.
On the Copperflex, though, you can really feel the support in your lumbar area, and because of this, we think any of the Coppeflex mattresses would be a great pick for someone with back pain.
In fact, we had someone in our office recently testing our beds and he chose the base model Copperflex for this reason and he says it has helped out with his back issues.
Copperflex mattress performance
Edge support
Beds with poor edge support make you feel like you’re going to roll off the mattress near the outer edge, and it is easy to sleep near the perimeter of the edge if you are sharing a bed with a partner or pets.
During testing, we found the edge support on the base model Copperflex to be solid but even better on the Copperflex Hybrid. Regardless of which one you choose, I think edge support will not be an issue, but if you want the best edge support, the hybrid is the better choice.
Motion isolation
Motion isolation refers to how well the bed deadens the impact of movement on the mattress — if you are a light sleeper who shares a mattress with someone who tosses and turns a lot, having good motion isolation is especially important.
This is a very similar story to edge support, where the foam version is slightly better than the hybrid version at absorbing the impacts of tossing and turning, but both perform well. For light sleepers the foam model is the better choice, but I don’t see it being a problem on the hybrid for the majority of sleepers.
Temperature regulation
One of the reported benefits of using copper infused foam is improved temperature regulation. This isn’t something we have observed with other beds that feature copper infused foam like Layla, but regardless we don’t see any temperature concerns with the Copperflex.
The biggest difference between the base model Copperflex and the Copperflex Pro is that the Pro models feature a “GlacioTex” cooling cooler, similar to the cover we see on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress. So if you are a hot sleeper who wants some active cooling elements then upgrading to the Copperflex Pro would make sense.
Copperflex (foam) mattress pricing
Size | Measurements (inches) | Price |
---|---|---|
Twin | 38×75 | $465 |
Twin XL | 38×80 | $565 |
Full | 54×75 | $599 |
Queen | 60×80 | $665 |
King | 76×80 | $932 |
Cal king | 72×84 | $932 |
The price point of the base model foam Copperflex mattress is seriously impressive. Only $665 for a queen is very affordable, and the price usually comes down to less than $500 throughout the year.
The hybrid version is a bit more expensive than the foam model, which is what we typically see with mattress pricing and should cost $699 for a queen-size at time of writing.
The base model is priced lower than even the super affordable Nectar Classic mattress and the zone support feature on the Copperflex is usually reserved for more expensive beds. Our entire team is very impressed with the price point of the Copperflex.
Brooklyn Bedding mattress policies
Free shipping
Like most online mattresses, the Copperflex will ship right to your door at no extra cost inside of a large box (as long as you live in the contiguous United States). If you live in Canada, you can still get it shipped to you, but there will be an additional cost involved depending on where you live.
Unboxing a mattress usually only takes a few minutes, and we recommend unboxing it with a friend to make the process go more smoothly.
I have unboxed many beds by myself, and while it’s doable, it is much more difficult.
120-night trial
All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses come with a slightly longer than average trial period of 120 nights in comparison to the usual standard of 100 nights. So you have roughly four months to sleep on it at home to determine if you like the mattress and if it suits your needs.
Keep in mind that it can take a month or longer for your body to adjust to a new mattress, no matter how well-suited it is to your sleeping preferences. The trial period begins the day the mattress is delivered, not when you actually start sleeping on it.
Return policy
Within the 120-night trial period, you can return the Copperflex mattress and get a refund. There is no upfront fee to initiate a return; however, they will deduct $99 from your refund, which helps facilitate the mattress pickup process.
Like most brands, Brooklyn Bedding will ask you to sleep on the bed for at least 30 nights before initiating a return because no matter how nice and well-suited your new mattress is to your sleep type, your body needs a bit of time to adjust to it.
Warranty
All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are backed by a standard 10-year warranty. This is the minimum duration of warranty you should expect for almost every mattress.
How does the Copperflex mattress compare to similar mattresses?
Copperflex vs. Nectar Classic
The Nectar Classic is one of the most popular memory foam beds available online. Like the Copperflex, it features memory foam, it’s affordable and it comes in both a hybrid and foam model. The firmness profiles of the foam models are also quite similar, at a medium-firm. The Nectar Hybrid though isn’t quite as firm and is closer to a medium and a better option for side sleepers.
The Copperflex is a bit more affordable than Nectar and it also has the lumbar support layer which is great for back pain. Nectar does come with a more generous set of policies including a year long trial period and free returns.
Copperflex vs. Leesa Studio
The Leesa Studio mattress is very similar to its ultra-popular Leesa Original mattress. Still, instead of using memory foam as a transition layer, memory foam is the main comfort layer of the Leesa Studio. The feel of both the Copperflex and the Leesa Studio is similar, and both beds have similar price points. However, the Copperflex mattress is more affordable by roughly $100 to $150 after factoring in discounts.
The Leesa Studio is quite a bit softer than the Copperflex and a more appropriate option for side sleepers.
Final thoughts on the Copperflex mattress
If you couldn’t tell by this point in the article, I am super impressed with Copperflex. This bed is now far and away, one of the best options for shoppers looking for an affordable memory foam that is extra supportive and good for back pain. Many beds with extra features designed to help with back pain are quite expensive, like the Saatva Rx, but the base model Copperflex competes on price with Amazon brands.
The entire Brooklyn Bedding mattress lineup is a good value and the Copperflex could be the best value mattress from the brand, and that is saying something considering the very high value sleepers get with the Signature mattress.
I think most sleepers should also just save money and go with either the foam or hybrid Copperflex instead of a Copperflex Pro unless you really need cooling features.
Overall, I think Brooklyn Bedding simply knocked it out of the park with Copperflex.
You might like the Copperflex mattress if:
- You want a memory foam feel
- You enjoy a firm mattress
- You want lumbar support
- You are shopping on a budget
You might not like the Copperflex mattress if:
- You want something luxurious
- You want a soft mattress
Other mattresses from Brooklyn Bedding
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe: This mattress is a more luxurious option from Brooklyn Bedding. It comes with multiple firmness options, uses responsive, neutral foams and has a very accommodating feel. The Aurora Luxe does include extra foam material underneath the cover, and the cover is cooling by default and has a strong cooling factor, which makes it one of our top picks for hot sleepers looking for the best cooling mattress.
Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite: This is Brooklyn Bedding’s most high-end and luxurious mattress, and it has a unique construction element called micro coils. These tiny coils provide extra support and bounce but also are body-conforming. Our team has observed micro coils giving off a memory foam-type of feel that conforms to your body. But without the slow-to-respond quality memory foam usually has.
Brooklyn Bedding Essential: Brooklyn Bedding’s Essential mattress is its most basic hybrid bed. It features coils and responsive foams to create an accommodating, responsive feel that most will find comfortable. It is only slightly firmer than a medium, which means it should work pretty well for all sleeper types. It is more expensive than the Copperflex, but not by much, and it is a coil bed by default.
All of the foams used in this bed are Certa-PUR US certified, which means they are free of ozone-depleting chemicals and other chemicals like formaldehyde.
Yes, if you decide to return it within the 120-night trial period, $99 will be deducted from your refund.
